Dominican Republic President Fernández visits CIS

On April 5 th President Leonel Fernández of the Dominican Republic led a UW faculty forum on how emerging countries can benefit from Internet economic opportunities. During the visit the Dominican Government and the UW Center for Internet Studies announced a cooperation agreement in support of the efforts of the Dominican Republic to develop an Internet strategy for national economic development.
The President was accompanied by US Ambassador to the Dominican Republic, the Honorable Charles Mannat, and a delegation of 50 Dominicans representing government, business, and academia.
President Fernández has credited the UW Center for Internet Studies with "influencing his Government's decisions to adopt national policies to allow the country to face successfully the challenges of the new millennium." During his visit to the University of Washington, the President discussed his country's Cyberpark initiative, including plans for a new Technology Institute in Santo Domingo. President Fernández's goal is to bring the Dominican Republic into the realm of the new digital economy.
