Raul Roman, Cornell University, speaks to students and faculty on
Thursday, October 10 2002
1:30 - 2:30
Thomson Hall #317
The 2002-03 Center for Internet Studies speaker series begins with a talk by Raul Roman who will lead a discussion on the viability of telecenters to promote Internet use in the developing world. In this seminar, Roman will present his findings from field research in India where his department has been engaged in several telecenter experiments. In particular, he seeks to address such questions as:
Are our projects contributing to equality of choices or are they favoring the already most advantaged sectors? In other words, are we widening the gap? Or are we maintaining a gap at a higher level?
Are telecenter projects sustainable in the long term while providing affordable development communication services?
What is the scalability of these pilot projects?
Can THEY (the villagers) make it happen?
Raul Roman is a Ph.D candidate at Cornell University where he coordinates, with Professor Emeritus Royal Colle, the Department of Communication's "Development Communication Research Group."
The general public is welcome to attend.
