Fan fiction: How the Internet enables fans to participate in developing their favorite fiction
Sharon Cumberland
Associate Professor, English, Seattle University
"Fan fiction" is the term used to describe creative works by fans of various novels, films and TV shows which appropriate established characters to tell stories of the fans' own devising. Though extending the stories of other authors has been going on for a long time, the current fanfic world is generally traced to the Star Trek zines of the 1960s. However, the internet has dramatically expanded the reach of fan fiction and enabled women (the majority of fanfic authors) to write, collaborate, and explore taboo subjects in ways that have not been possible in the past. This presentation will give an overview of fan fiction and its genres and consider the legal, cutltural, and technological problems of participatory fan arts.
