How do you find cybercriminals?: A look at responding to computer crime

Dave Dittrich
Researcher, Center for Information Assurance and Cybersecurity, UW iSchool

How do you find and prosecute cybercriminals, from those who damage systems or destroy data, to those who profit from extortion or spamming using tens of thousands of compromised computers?  It seems like you can just look to see where an "attack" comes from and trace it to someone at a keyboard, but in reality it is far from being so easy.  In this talk we'll discuss the technical limitations of finding bad guys and evidence online: What are the problems, what's possible, what's not possible?  We'll look at where research is going and consider some specific attacks and how digital forensics helps solve them.
